Winton Weiss

Portland resident, Winton Weiss, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at the age of 97.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:30 PM, Tuesday, November 28, 2023.

Zeno Winton Weiss was born September 18, 1926 in Red Bluff, California to Francis Zeno and Frances (Barnett) Weiss.  He grew up in Elgin, Oregon.  In his high school years his family moved to Seaside, Oregon.  With his parents permission, he entered the US Army and served during WWII. He graduated from Multnomah School of the Bible and received a degree from Seattle Pacific College. He married Bernice “Bonnie” Schnuit, whom he met and courted at Multnomah, on July 12, 1951.

Winton pastored in Granite Falls, Washington and in Gold Beach, Oregon.   In 1957, Winton and Bonnie, along with their two sons moved to Portland, Oregon where Winton attended Portland State to receive his teaching certificate. Winton taught school in the Parkrose school district for 28 years where they lived together for the rest of their lives.  He was well loved by his students.

Winton was a talented singer.  He was in a quartet in college and sang in the choir at Central Bible Church where his family attended. Winton enjoyed the outdoors.  He lived close enough to walk to teach school; hiked, especially in the Columbia Gorge; and then took long car rides with Bonnie meandering through country roads. He enjoyed working in the yard and garden and spent many of his retirement years keeping his yard looking beautiful.  He had a passion for photography and especially enjoyed taking scenery pictures.

Winton was a faithful member of the Navigators Bible memorization program.  As a member of Central Bible church, he served on various committees and volunteered in the elementary Sunday School program.  He also facilitated the Bible study small group that was hosted in his home.

Survivors include his son, Mark Weiss and wife Alisa; daughter-in-law JoAnne Weiss; grandchildren Jacob, Peter, Linda, Rebecca, Sarah, Nathan, Stephen and Abraham; and nine great-grandchildren: Christian, Noah, Jude, Caleb, Mabel, Ella, Piper, Matthew, and Alice.  He was preceded in death by his four sisters; his wife of 70 years Bernice in 2021; son, Kenneth in 2018 and grandson, Taylor in 2011.
